Talentueux joueur de Kora, instrument à cordes africain, Toumani Diabaté est l'un des instrumentistes le plus connu venu d'Afrique. Il a notamment travaillé avec d'autres grands noms de la musique tels qu'Ali Farka Toure et Bjork.

Player of the kora instrument, Toumani Diabaté is one of the best known African instrumentalist and maybe the most gifted kora player. He has worked together with other big names as Ali Farka Toure Bjork.

Pour sa soirée du 6 novembre au World Music Festival d'Oslo, Toumani Diabaté a joué en duo avec tout un orchestre, l'orchestre norvégien KORK. Trop souvent la musique du monde est fondée sur des inspirations occidentales, telles que le rock, le blue, le funk ou le ska, auxquelles sont ajoutées des rythmes venus d'Asie, d'Afrique ou d'Amérique Latine. Mais avec Toumani, nous nous retrouvons au cœur de la musique traditionnelle de l'Afrique de l'ouest. Chacune de ses notes en est imprégnée, chacun de ses solos y entraine l'ensemble des musiciens de l'orchestre.

For the night of the 6th of November in Oslo World Music festival, he played together with the Norwegian radio Orchestra KORK. It was an amazing show. World music usually consists of a backbone of contemporary “western” music such as rock, blues, punk, funk or ska with a little drop of ethnic music from Asia, Africa or Latin America. But this time it was the complete opposite. Traditional West African music was implemented into notes and given to a big orchestra to play, while the star of the night would improvise and play solos.

Quelle drôle de situation que celle de voir l'improvisateur malien transformer en académique sa musique aux multiples rythmes transmise oralement de générations en générations. Son kora surplombe toutes les autres cordes, cuivres et autres percussions, et sans jamais les perturber, crée une synergie des sons. La salle pouvait sentir cette étroite coopération entre les musiciens et ce second chef d'orchestre atypique.

What a funny change. Who would think that it is possible to put polyrythmical music, that is for generations handed over orally, into a written form. But I guess everything is possible with Toumani Diabaté. His kora always had the leading voice over all the string, wind and rhythmical instruments, but never disruptively always in perfect synergy. We could feel a magnificent cooperation between all the musicians on stage: after each song the Conductor Clark Rundell would always bow and thank Toumani for and the audience would clap and clap.

A la fin de ce concert commun, chacun fredonnait les mélodies des chansons de Toumani. L'orchestre Kork quitta la scène pour la laisser, le temps de quelques chansons, a Toumani Diabaté et son groupe de musiciens venus du Mali et de Guinée. La chaleur de la salle monta encore d'un cran, les spectateurs remerciant les musiciens dans la pure tradition Ouest Africaine, en dansant et chantant. Les derniers mots du griot Sekouba Kandia Kouyate ne furent compris que par les maliens, mais traduits par leur réaction, l'ensemble du public compris qu'ils devaient être des plus appropriés !

In the end of this joint concert everyone was humming the basic melody of Toumani’s song. T demonstrate the traditional version of Malian music, KORKleft the stage and Toumani Diabaté would play with only his band of players from Mali and from Guinea. And again the heat in hall rose, and more and more people would come to thank the musicians in the typical est African way, by giving them bills on their head. Special thanks go the griot Sekouba Kandia Kouyate. I didn't understand what he was singing about, but according to the reactions of the Malian public, his words where welladdressed.
