Le festival de Musique du Monde d'Oslo s'est tenu du 3 au 8 novembre dernier. Comme à son habitude, la programmation était des plus cosmopolite avec de grands noms tels que le brésilien Gilberto Gil, le roi du Rai Khaled, le nigérien Tony Allen et beaucoup d'autres.
Les concerts se chevauchant à différents endroits de la capitale norvégienne, nous avons choisi d'assister aux concerts des deux représentants de la musique traditionnelle malienne, Oumou Sangare et Toumani Diabate, et de Ojos de Brujo aux inspirations espagnoles et cubaines.

The Oslo World Music festival took place from the 3d to the 8th of November. The offer was diverse and the actors where of big names : Gilberto Gil from Brasil, French King of Rai Khaled,Tony Allen from Nigeria and many more. We had chosen only three concerts, due to the only mistake of this festival, that most of the concerts where overlapping. Two of our chosen concerts where the famous Malinian traditional musicians, Oumou Sangare and Toumani Diabate, and the third one was no one else but Spanish- Cuban Ojos de Brujo (The Eyes of the Wizard).

Née à Bamako au Mali en 1969 et marchant sur les traces de sa mère Aminata Diakité, Oumou Sangaré s'est mise à chanter dès son plus jeune âge. A 16 ans, elle rejoint le groupe Djoliba percussions, où elle rencontre Toumani Diabaté, et les accompagne dans leur tournée européenne. De retour à Bamako, elle enregistre son premier album solo, Moussoulou, qui sort en 1990.

Born in Bamako, Mali in 1969 to the singer Aminata Diakité, Oumou Sangaré has been singing since her early childhood. At the age of 18 she joined the Djoliba Percussion band (where she also met Toumani Diabaté) and accompanied them on an European tour. When she returned back to Bamako she started working on her debut solo album Moussoulou (Women), released in 1990.

Centré sur la situation difficile de Mali et sur les nombreux taboos de sa société très conservatrice, son album suscite de vives réactions. Les paroles de ses chansons appellent à une prise de pouvoir des femmes. Les femmes maliennes demandent leur liberté et le choix de leur mari. Durant les vingt années qui ont suivies, elle a été intronisée comme la Reine de la scène musicale malienne. Ses mélanges de musiques traditionnelles, de funk, de soul et de jazz, l'ont fait connaître, elle et sa culture, à travers le monde.

She was only 21 years old, but this album raised a big turmoil, since she touched upon many issues that were taboo in the extremely conservative society of that time. The lyrics of her songs called for empowerment of women, women seeking for freedom, and not being forced into marriages. For the next 20 years, she was known as the queen of the Malian music stage. She knows how to mix the vocal traditional music known as Wassoulou with funky, soul and jazz expressions, bringing the best of her culture to the world.

Le jeudi 5 novembre au soir, le Cosmopolite Hall d'Oslo était déjà rempli d'une audience qui ne pouvait pas attendre plus longtemps la venue de l'artiste africaine.

On the 5th of November, the Cosmopolite Music Hall in Oslo was already quite full one hour before the concert and the majority of the audience were from her native West Africa, and they could not wait for the big star they are proud of and adore to set foot on the stage.

Charismatique fût l'arrivée de la Reine. Grande de presque deux mètres, sa voix dégage une énergie et une puissance qui la rendent presque intimidante. Assurée et fière, elle captiva son public au moment même ou elle entra sur scène et pris son micro pour se présenter en français à ce public norvégien majoritairement francophone.
Ses premières chansons furent lyriques et douces, le public s'avançant petit à petit vers la scène pour commencer à danser. Le rythme s'enflamma au fil des titres et entraina avec les musiciens tous les spectateurs de la salle sur le dance floor. Pendant que Cheick Oumar Diabate enchainait les solos de Djembé, les deux danseuses Dandio Sidibe and Fatoumata Diawara entraient presque en transe sur une scène transportée sur le continent africain.
Le concert s'achève, nous quittons le hall empli de cette énergie malienne, impatient de la retrouver demain avec le concert de Toumani Diabaté.

And big she is. Six feet tall with emphatic woman curves and a voice so firm you wouldn't want to argue with her. The minute she walked on the stage, the moment she grabbed the microphone, the entire audience held its breath as we could all feel her strong personality. She is confident, proud, but full of love and big smiles. The first songs were very lyrical and slow, but as time went on, the heat in the concert hall rose and more and more people started to dance. By the end, the whole dance floor was full, djembefola Cheick Oumar Diabate was giving wild solos and the two backing vocals: Dandio Sidibe and Fatoumata Diawara were dancing for their lives. We left the hall full of energy and I couldnt wait for the next day, the concert of Oumou’s music colleague: Toumani Diabaté.
